One-hour running is a competition format where the participants aim to cover as long a distance as possible within 60 minutes. The sport is officially recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), but it is rarely practiced except for new record attempts. The history of one-hour running dates back to the 19th century, and Sifan Hassan recently shattered the world record with 18,930 meters at the Diamond League gala in Brussels.

Highlights

  • The first two officially recognized records in the men's and women's categories were set in 1904 by Alfred Shrubb with a distance of 18.742 kilometers, and in 1981 by Silvana Crociata.
  • Sifan Hassan recorded 18,930 meters, which was more than a lap longer than the previous record.
  • Åsa Wiklund set a district record with 15,386 meters during a competition in Krokom.
